I am planning to order very soon the FCP Groton turbo exhaust, for my N/A 240 sedan, from this page.
I've got several questions, mostly to make sure that the installation can go as painlessly and quickly as possible, before I place the order.
First, here's the background. I will not being doing this install myself. I have neither the tools nor shop equipment nor expertise to replace an exhaust system. The independent mechanic who I have asked to do an exhaust replacement is the most honest and trustworthy mechanic I know, but does not have the resources to improvise if I screw up somewhere. What I mean is that if a normal mechanic's shop might add an extra exhaust hanger or something I forgot, he will not because (1) he doesn't have it in stock and (2) he's not going to do anything not specifically requested. So, I need to get everything right the first time. Otherwise there will be problems, and I'll probably be in trouble, in not having a working car as well as with unhappy parents (who aren't totally in favor of this installation).
Second, I think I've got a unique situation. I don't really understand how the catalytic converter fits into the situation, and what front pipe I need, so I really need some guidance here. I do know that I need a new front/header pipe. My current one is cracked. It appears that ipd's system attaches *behind* the front pipe plus cat converter, so I would presume that the front of an N/A system is at least as large in size as the turbo exhaust, up to there.
Therefore, I would deduce that, to get the turbo effect, I need to order everything in the "Volvo 240 Turbo Exhaust" table except for the first item ("Header Pipe from Manifold to converter pipe . . ."). Additionaly, to fix the current problem, I need to order a new front pipe--item 840-101 ("Header Pipe (Front Pipe) 84-90 that do not have an oxygen sensor . . .") earlier in the page?
I'd greatly appreciate guidance on what I need to order. I *think* I've got the right idea of what I need to order, but I want to make sure that I am actually replacing the front pipe properly, and that I'm buying the correct turbo exhaust stuff. Please let me know if I'm right or if you see any problems!
