Rewiring my reverse lights................

Since you've tested the switch on the top of the transmission, the only place it could be an open is at the left rear light light assembly connection. Check this before you go for re-wiring. Are you sure you tested the output side of the tranny switch? because this is not usually accessable from the shifter location. You need to lower the trans a bit to access the switch/wiring harness from underneath the car.
IIRC, the wires go behind the drivers side center carpet and up over the steering wheel down the left side rocker panel into the trunk.
