Brass vs. Steel...Cam Retaining Plate 120-130

hello,

once again i shredded a set of plastic timing gears. I have replaced them with a steel set from a b30 (under $10 at my local PYP). While i was in there i noticed quite a bit of scoring on gear side of the cam retaining plate. I replaced it with a nice looking one i had lying around.

The original plate appears to be made of steel, while the replacement appears to be made of brass.

Which is the better part? Does it even make a difference?
Is the wear on the plate normal or do i have a bigger problem?

The engine has a much better idle now and makes less noise overall.

Thanks for taking the time,
