Rusted out rockers 200 1986

On my '86 244 my rocker panels (esp. driver's side) are really rusted bad (I'm in NE Ohio). I have a friend of a friend who does body work & will fix them for $400. Is that reasonable? He says if they get much worse it can affect the alignment and rigidity of the car. True? Mill Supply used to stock rocker panels but no more. On the driver's side for about a foot length the top of the rocker is totally gone (I know - I waited too long), so he says it's a lot of work to put that in. Also what caused this? All my other 240's never got this bad, but had some rust there - especially starting a few inches from the door hinge.
