strange rapid surge while driving, sometimes really bad! Help! 200 1980

My 1980 245 5spd started developing a strang problem about a week ago. It happened first while going 25mph up a hill; suddenly the car started to surge, several times a second. My first thought was that it felt like a car behind me was giving me rapid bumps as I drove up the hill. Not head jerging surges, but rapid, quick smaller surges, not in a pattern, but a random occurance. As the week continued the problem seemed to get worse, especially in the mornings while driving. I can get the surges to happen in all gears and all speeds, but seems to get worse when under a heavier acceleration and lower RPM's. Another thought was that it felt as if a cylinder were cutting out randomly at short intervals, causing rapid short lived power loss. The weird thing is, the problem isn't continuous, as with this morning, it was fairly severe going to work in the morning, but then completely dissapeared in the afternoon on the way home. Finally, with a cold start, the car seems to get really close to dying, so much so, I have to hit the gas in order to keep it alive; but after warm, seems to idle fine. This issue seems to have coincided with the surge issue. What could this problem be? A bad tank of gas? Please help, its going to put my lady out of commission soon!

Jason
