There is a fail-safe inside the trans, so if the car gets bumped while in park or someone shifts from drive to park with the car moving, the transmission park lock will not break.

The transmission park lock is simply a pin that slides into a slot or hole in a disk inside the trans. The pin is on a hinge with a spring to keep it in place. If the car is forced to move while in park, the pin will bend at the hinge and snap back into the next available slot or hole.

By the way, there are no actual gears in an automatic transmission.

I'd be afraid of the 'mechanics' at the shop. Seems like you have 1) a dead battery or 2) a charging problem. I would start by testing the battery and cleaning the battery connections.
