960 power steering pump noise 900

Greetings BBrs, I recently took the wife's '96 960 on a thousand mile trip. The power steering pump started getting really noisy. I topped it off with some fresh fluid. No change. When I reached my destination I drained what I could from the resivoir and refilled with Valvoline synthetic power steering fluid. This seemed to help a bit. When I returned home I secured a rebuilt pump. Flushed my steering system with 3 qts of cheapo dexron fluid. Changed the pump, cleaned the resivoir and refilled with the Valvoline synthetic power steering fluid. Even after purging all the air the new pump is almost as noisy as the old one. Has anyone else experienced this? Is there a better fluid that will help? All replies on how to quieten this baby down will be appreciated..
