clunk 700

Hello Everyone

I have a 1986 740 turbo when I go from reverse to drive there is a clunk sound, then If I go from drive to reverse there is a clunk again here is the kicker the U-joints are good no play in them at all they are tight. I checked the carrier bearing and there is some play in it could this cause the clunk???? I should also say that the car is completely off the ground on jack stands when I shift to the different positions I hear the clunk in the very back maybe in the axle I don't know. This is what I think this car looked like it was owned by kids right before I got it and it is a turbo could they abuse the car untill the differential is bad could that be the clunk??? I hope I have provide enough info???

Thanks
jeff
