cleaning a greasy trans 120-130

I just purchased a M41 and OD unit for my conversion project. They're covered in grease and just sitting out there in the garage right now. I'm wondering what people here recommend doing or using to clean the outsides of these units? Preferably I'd like to use some enviro-friendly products that aren't too toxic. Any suggestions out there? I'm imagining using some sort of grease-cutter, and wiping a lot of it off into terry-cloth rags and old towels, which I might even be able to wash in a washing-machine after.

TIA!!
