960 alignment 900 1997

So after dropping my car off one evening at Merchants tire to get an alignment, the manager calls me at work the next day saying that they can't align my car. Apparently the independent rear suspension is 'more than they can handle'. Why do they offer a 4 wheel alignment if they can't do them, they can align front wheels but not rear?
In any case, I'm looking for a place to get my car aligned now. I have 4 new tires and want to do it so they will wear as evenly as possible. The local Volvo dealer can do it for $90 but I have to wait over a week for them to have time for me.
Any alignment tips or warnings from experienced 960 owners?
Oh, and how do these places even do alignments? I mean how do they measure and adjust everything in all the dimensions needed to properly setup the wheels?
Thanks!
