and I was pleasantly suprised at the smoothness, and performance of it. Some of you may recall that I was contemplating the purchase ot an $8000CAD (6000USD) 240 that has been sitting for a couple of years.
well, after being screwed around by the seller (an older East Indian Dr.), he finally started leaving messages on MY machine, after I was supposed to come over to his office to take the car for a drive. After I could not show up yesterday at 11am, he called me both yesterday, and this morning, wondering where I had went, and wether or not I was going to show.
After I called him yesterday to take the car for a spin, he seemed a bit annoid that I was calling to take the car again, so I just left him and his overpriced 240, and went to the auctions, not thinking that he'd be interedsted in selling the car to me. To my suprise he called me this morning, asking where I was yesterday, and wether or not I could come today to drive the car with him.
SO I went to his office today, and after seeing him again, we both went on a test drive. THe auto 87 240 dl performed very well. it shifted as it was supposed to, btu for some reason when I pressed the o/d button, the car did nto downshift as it was supposed to. SO this left me winderin if the o/d was working or not..?!??!! finally after engagine and disengaging it quite a few times, it started to work as normal, and got the car moving along quite well. I had concluded that the reason for this was b/c the car had sat for sooo long.
After we had returned to his office, I checked the conditions of the fluids, and offered him 6000CAD cash...he slowly declined, then I offerd 6500, with the funds to him by morning....again he declined, sayign that he really wants his 8000CAD (6000USD). So I thanked him for his time, as well as for the test drive, and reminded him that he has my phone #, should he change his mind.
I really think that he'll come around, especially since he's expecting everyone to come bangin his door down for this car. Considerign that he hardly has any time for anyone (runs his own practise), I doubt many would give his overpriced 240dl much attention. In addition, considering that he is (for now) very inflexible on the price of this car, I also doubt anyone will purchase the car. Many ppl here in the city where I live, see the older Volvo's as "too boxy, and junky lookin, and seem to resembly a Lada) and yet are very $$ to maintain. Finally, since he has only had 1 other person (in a whole week) call him about the car, and that person was supposed to come in from outta town, I doubt that he'll have anyone pay him what he wants for his car.
Some of the other flaws I noticed with the car incl...
-a/c does not work anymore. He's convinced that it just needs a recharge. I told him that it needs conversion to r134, he didn't believe me, I just gave up trying to explain to him that r12 is ilegal in Canada.
-dash has cracks even tho the car was stored in a garage for the whole time
-right speaker in car does not work
-rust pattern (very light surface) is appearing on the left rocker
-front spoiler is coming apart at the edge from the front bumper
aside from all this, the car looks great! Sure it does nto perform like my 88 325is BMW, but then again, I'm purchasign it for it's ease of serviceability, its simplicity, and finally cause it's a freakin tank!!!!
I doubt many others will approach him seriously for the car, and I think that there's abtou a 70-80% chance that he'll call me back on the car, and accept my 6500. By that tiem I think I'll decrease it to 6000, if he actually does call.
just thought I'd share how the whole process os going :)
take care guys,
