No start 700 1990

I've just discovered this site, and what a great site it is! I've looked for an answer to my question in the archives, but haven't found one, so here goes. It doesn't matter if I drive 4 miles or 50, my '90 740 (non turbo) will very often not restart after I have turned the engine off. Sometimes I have to wait 15 minutes, but more often than not, I've waited 2 hours before it will start again. I turn the key, but the engine does not turn over, although I can hear a sound from the starter, like a soft clicking. The weather in my region lately has been from moderately hot to 100 degrees F for days on end, but this problem has occurred during "normal" weather, in the 70's to 80's.

I've moved the shifter back and forth and then back to park. I've pushed the car a few inches back and forth. I've checked the connections and posts to the battery and they are good. I've had two car parts stores check the starter, the alternator, and the battery, and they all read good with proper volts. I never use the A/C. This has been happening before and since I've installed a new timing belt. When the engine is ready, it starts up strong, but what gives? Has anyone else had this problem? Does anyone know why this happens and/or how it can be corrected? The engine doesn't stop while I'm driving; only after I've parked the car.
