Broken fuel gauge 900 1993

Fuel gauge 93 940 non turbo doesn't always work. It either registers correct fuel level or empty. I have tested by placing a 68 ohm resistor per green book between wire going to gauge from tank and ground, and also tried grounding the wire going to the gauge. Neither resulted in any reading so the gauge is apparently the problem. Does anyone have any fixes for a tempermental problem gauge. I tried resoldering some connections on gauge with no positve results. Gauge still works sometimes and not others. Any advise would be appreciated. I'm sure a new gauge is big $$$$'s.
