Ignition Cutting Out, 740t, auto, 125k 700 1991

My ignition started randomly cutting out this last weekend. The 'service engine' light also began to go on and off intermitently, although that light is not always on when the car dies. I checked error codes and I get an aim mass sensor error, but the computer is clearly getting information from the ams. It runs strong until it suddenly cuts out. Then the ignition must be turned off for about half a minute and it always fires right back up again. I'm pretty sure it is not a charing issue; it always has plenty of juice to re-start and the voltage is fine when running. I'm not eager to replace the ams since I had a Nissan that for some reason almost always errored on the ams but ran fine. Also the Haynes book says that the computer is set to use a dummy full load signal for the ams if it is not actually getting a signal. Thank you in advance for any help.
