I am contemplating the purchase of a local (Northern BC)1991 940GLE, and would like to hear what issues or problems I should look for in the car. It has a 4 cyl, non-turbo, automatic tranny, basic options (ie air/tilt/cruise sunroof, no Volvo stereo or power seats). Tires have 90% tread remaining.
It appears to be in very good to excellent condition, with 124000km (77000 miles). No dents or dings, only the usual smudges from other car doors, which smudges appear to be easy to rub out. Zero rust. The driver's seat has torn stitching in the leather.
I currently own and operate a 92 960 with the 6304 engine, and an 89 760 with the PRV engine, both of which cars run like a dream and have been faultless in performance for over 200,000 each. I also have a 65 1800S with a B20, however 4 cylinder in the 940 bears no similarity with the B20, outside the number of cylinders and sparkplugs.
The engine does not apear at first blush to have any serious oil leaks, and has not been detailed, so leaks should be obvious. The trans cooler lines seem to be weeping slightly at the fittings. The rear of the engine appears to be dusty only (no oil visible).
The asking price is 6000Cdn, which does not seem outrageous with the low mileage.
What words of wisdom does the list have regarding this model Volvo??
Is the changing of the cam belt in this engine any worse/better than that in a 6304? What is the service interval? Etc, etc, etc.
Many thanks in advance
John D.
