spark plug maintenance 700 1989

Hi all

I've always wondered how often do most brickboards change their spark plugs. The manual and even haynes recommend changing the spark plugs every 10 000 km, which seems too frequent.

What I like to know is the consensus on

1. assuming a NA 740 with good old plain Bosch copper plugs, how often do you recommend changing them?

2. is it worthwhile checking the spark plug gap before installing it? I have checked it once ages ago and it was within spec and have never bothered again.

3. I've read the old car repair textbooks that plugs should be regularly checked (the gap that is) and cleaned. Any one actually does this anymore?

As always thanks in advance

Aslan
