overdrive problem 700 1989

You didn't say if it was an Auto or manual transmission. If it is an auto there is a wire from the OD lock out button on the side of the shifter to the OD switch on the transmission. It runs out of the bottom of the shifter to the OD switch/solinoid. On my 87 it was a green wire. What happens is the insulation over the years and due to the elements breaks off the wire. The bare wire grounds out on transmission case. It hangs down beside the transmission.
Easy to check if you have the car off the ground. If it is bare just cut out the bad section and splice in a new section. Or just run a new wire from the button to the transmission.
