1900 740 Stalling problem 700 1990

For about the past two months, my 1990 Volvo 740 GL (4spd automatic, 4cyl, 203000miles) has been ‘sputtering’ as if it were going to stall when moving from a stop sign etc. When you start, it’d seem like it’s going to stall because the engine is lacking gas, and it goes from around 300 – 500RPM, after a few it’ll go up to 1500, shifts into second and acceleration and driving is normal. The car runs perfect besides this, always starts quickly, shifts fine etc. The problem is sporadic, it’s hard to get it to reoccur and sometimes it’ll go away for a few days and it’ll come back.

I took it into the Volvo Dealership and they were puzzled by it so we replaced the Idle Valve, Camshaft Position Sensor, had the transmission flushed (a lot of gunk, took about 12 litters to clean out, but was fine) engine compression checked (runs good for it’s age), had a new head gasket put on, new oil, filter, spark plugs etc. They checked the ECU and it was fine and it didn’t report any error codes. We checked the distributor and there was some oil in it which could have caused it, so we had it cleaned and rebuilt with new seals etc. and it was good for about a week.

About a week ago, the ‘sputtering problem’ got worse to where it’d completely stall when I’d be in the middle of the intersection. I’d start off and the engine would sputter, right around 500RPM, go up and down a little and then die. Even if I gave it gas, it wouldn’t do anything. Flooring it / little bit doesn’t affect it. I’ve noticed that if I put it in neutral, give it a bit and then put it into drive again sometimes I can recover and it won’t stall. I’m clueless about cars as you can already tell and the dealership doesn’t have any ideas. Anyone have any ideas?
