Subject Car: 1989 760TI with 112,000 miles. New-to-me 6 months ago and I have driven it for about 6,000 miles.
I believe that my car is developing a transmission problem. I am not sure of the exact model number, but it is AW7X. The problem first became apparent on Sunday. First drive of the day, and I get about 2 miles from home. From a stopped position, I start up an incline and the car just does not seem to accellerate properly. The RPMs are creeping up, but road speed is not following like I expect. I made a loop back home, 5 miles total maybe and by the time I get back home all seems well. I checked the fluid level and it is fine. I went on my way and no more problems.
Tonight I was on the Interstate and I was about 5 minutes into my trip. I was going 50 to 55 and when I began to pass a truck, the car started to accellerate and I could feel the pull, but then the pull just let off, RPMs increased slightly and slowly, but accelleration was gone. I didn't push it too hard after this incident so as to not cause any unnecessary damage. Note: During normal cruising all seems fine, 65 MPH at ~2500 RPM.
I have never experienced a slipping transmission before, but I would expect the RPMs to shoot up more quickly as the slipping occurrs. Also the problem with my car seems to occur in all three gears. Wouldn't this imply that all three clucth packs are bad? Could a faulty pump for the torque converter present these symptoms? Could these symptoms be caused if the kick down cable is sticking?
I was also wondering if a leak in one of the intake hoses might give a similar feeling - poor accelleration? I only ask because I am not seeing the RPMs shoot way up when the problem occurs and it seems like low mileage for transmission problems. The boost gauge is showing pressure.
I don't know when the transmission fluid might have been changed and the fluid condition is not perfect. Color is like honey with a tinge of red, but definately not bright red. There is no foul or burned smell to the fluid. I'll be changing it soon to see if this has any affect.
I don't want to get too far ahead, but If I must replace the transmission, Do I need to find another turbo model to get the correct torque converter? Is it OK to install a lock-up torque converter in a turbo car?
I hope that I have not posed too many questions in a single message, but this is new territory for me. Please help where you can and thanks in advance for your help.
