Electrical Trouble - Where to Start 200 1986

My recently purchased 1986 245 DL Wagon displays the "burn out" bulb indicator when brake is depressed. I have checked all the brake lights, they work but the "reerse" light does not. I've noticed that the rear cargo hood wires routed through the hinges are broken would this cause the bulb indicator problem? I've briefly looked at the "nuetral" indicator device on the automatic and it appears to be lined up properly. I have not checked the bulb indicator under the dash as of yet. Need guidance as I am all thumbs when it comes to electronics.

thanks
