I killed my clunk!!!! 700 1988

So I've had this front end clunk for what seems like an eternity. With almost everything on the front end new, tie rods, ball joints, strut bushings, struts, strut mounts, I was basically just going to ignore it and go on with my life.

My clunk story happens when I brake... but only at very slow speeds... like less than 5 mph going over a bump or pothole, or when I come to a complete stop. I have been completely unable to reproduce this clunk under the car.

By dumb freaking luck, I happened to have the breaker bar on the lug nuts tightening them up when the wrench slipped and I really forced the lug nut quickly... this caused my clunk to happen!!! I was able to do it again and again and isolate it... turned out to be the lower rear strut rod bushing... not the little cone shaped ones, but the big cylindrical one pressed into the rear of the strut rod.

I replaced the strut rod (both sides) with a junkyard piece and voilers...
no more clunk!!!!

I dunno if this helps anyone out there, but well, here it is.

Mike
