Starts fine then sputters...Main fuel pump bad? 200 1986

Just bought what I thought was a steal. '86 240DL B230F 153K $750. Seller said it volvo shop said it needed both fuel pumps. Just wanted to throw it out and see what everyone thinks.
It starts fine and runs for a few minutes then starts stalling like it's fuel starved. After it sits for a few minutes it is fine. If I get it on the freeway, it runs fine until I need to slow down, then it stalls. Hopeless in town.
After reading some similar posts I crawled under to listen to the main fuel pump. When the car is running fine, the main fuel pump doesen't even seem to be running. Then I can hear the pump starting to run slowly and speed up that's when the car starts to sputter and die. The main pump gets pretty hot after a while. Seems to me the main is bad, but will the car even run without the main?
