Engine start failure 700 1987

I have 1987 Volvo 740GLE Non-Turbo. Recently the engine died enroute to home and I had to be towed in. I have adequate fuel flow as the return line flows heavily. Part of the time the car will start and run, but misses. Other times the car will not start at all.
