Starts fine then sputters...Main fuel pump bad? 200 1986

Sounds more like the main is not always getting fuel from the tank pump, that would explain speeding up and getting hot (the fuel flow cools it). Tank pump can be failing or split in the small hose from sock to tank pump, very common. If tank is more than half full a problem with hose or tank pump would not occur as the main pump can suck the fuel. If problem only occurs when tank is low then the cause is ifor sure in the tank.
