Cold Start Relay and Fuel System Questions 1800 1970

1970 E

Early 1970E. Has cold start Relay - not thermal timer.

No Voltage at the connector. No voltage to the lead going into the
relay (underneath). No voltage at the connector to the relay
(underneath).

1. Am I checking this right?
2. As far as I can tell from the schematic for a 72E, I think one of
the leads going into the relay should be coming from the starter.
Therefore, I should see 12 volts at this lead while cranking, but I'm
not sure if it is from the black lead to center, or at the
connector. Perhaps a bad wire? Could I put a jumper in from
negative to the center connector on the relay and then check for
voltage from the relay? However, the 72E schematic is for a thermal timer, and not the relay system, but I'm guessing the input is the same. Can a
thermal timer be used to replace the relay?

3. While checking fuel pressure, noticed the fuel pressure would
quickly bleed off to zero. Also, I suspect fuel pump is not OEM
style and perhaps does not have a check valve.

4. While adjusting fuel pressure regulator, noticed that was running
at 24 psi, adjusted up to nominal 29 psi.

5. Currently installed fuel pressure regulator is different than what I think
is OEM. Mine has a single inlet on the side below the dome which comes off
the fuel rail. The return comes off underneath from a straight
nipple. A spare that I have which I think is OEM Has 2 nipples on
either side below the dome, and a nipple that has a 90 degree bend
underneath center (looks like the one in the manuals). So, I will
have to straighten out the system. I noticed there are non-standard
type rubber fuel hoses. Any thoughts?

Thanks, Tom
