Run's only for a few seconds 700 1990

I am having a fuel problem i think.
My 740 GLE will start up fine but will only run for a few seconds.
I can keep it running for a little longer if I fiddle with the gas pedal.
The Fuel Pump Relay is activating both main and feeder pumps both before starting and while running. I did replace the fuel filter but there was no change. I suspect the main fuel pump is failing.
Does anyone know if these are the symptoms of a failing fuel pump.
I am not sure and they are expensive to replace.
