First start of day always has a backfire sort of noise 200 1989

My '89 244 does a kind of backfire thing (a not really loud noise with a sort of mild jump) when I first start it in the morning. My mechanic replaced the rotor, which seemed to help for a couple of days, then it started doing it again. (It also seems to run a little rough for a few seconds after this happens also.) If I turn it off and restart it, it doesn't do it. He's suggested the fuel pump check valve as our next try for a fix. Are we on the right track??
