Air in 240 gas line??? 200

My 245 has a very quircky starting habit. Sometimes it spits and sputters and coughs before starting and other times it starts right up. I have replaced bith pumps and relay. Could something be wrong with the injectors? Some of you have mentioned the possibility of air in the line, but that doesn't make sense to me. It seems as though air would be pushed out through the injectors or back to the gas tank. Is air in the fuel line a problem?
Thanks, John 1991 245
