Hello all,
own an '81 DeLorean which, in case you didn't know comes factory equipped
with a PRV-6, Volvo varient with Bosch K-Jetronic fuel injection, (Lambda
emissions equipped) and Bosch computer controlled ignition.
I have a stubborn problem that I believe to be electrical vs. fuel. The car
experiences mis-firing under load. When I pull away from a dead-stop, the
car "stutters", it also does this upon hard acceleration, and the
acceleration curve goes flat.
I have checked all fuel system pressures with a Bosch K-jet fuel pressure
test rig. I have changed the filter repeatedly. The -entire- fuel system has
been replaced, including the metering head (fuel distributor). I've even
pulled the new injectors and had them re-cleaned. The fuel tank was removed
and cleaned before the car was ever even started.
Electrically, I've repeatedly replaced the cap, rotor and wires. Here's the
twist: The behavior changes when I try different types of coils or ballast
resistors. I have replaced the ignition ECU module (Bosch again). This had
no effect. If I use a Bosch 18Kv coil, the car idles well, but mis-fires
under load -if- you push the pedal down too far. If I use the OEM Bosch 12Kv
coil, the car stutters under load when pulling away, but smooths out once
RPM's reach 2200 +. The timing advance has been checked and it works
properly. The timing is set correctly, which is 13 +/- 2 degrees for a
DeLorean. I've tried "power timing" with some success. The pulse coil inside
of the distributor that sends signals to the ignition ECU measures the
proper resistance according to the tech manual. Could it still be bad? I've
also checked all grounding points.
As you can see, I'm getting desperate since I'm stepping outside of DeLorean
circles and looking to other areas for help. Your article was well written
and I'm hoping that you've seen this behavior in other cars. Any insight you
