Poor idle 700 1986

I'm having problems with idle speed.
If I hit the accelerator and bring the RPMs up to 2500 and
above, and then release it abruptly, the RPMs will drop down to almost
0, and struggle to come up to 800 or so range. Frequently engine
will simply shut off.
Throttle body is clean. Vacuum hoses and connections are fine.
What else should I check.
