1989 760, Automatic Shifter seems a little loose. Has some play in it. 700

when I drop into reverse, I can here a little bit of what sounds like clunkiness in the shifter. When In drive the stick stays in gear but I can move the stick forward and back more than I would like 9It feels loose). Can I tighten this by getting at it from inside the car...i.e remove the plastic piece beneath the emergency brake?
