Hood Liner 700 1987

Anyone have any opinions/recommendations regarding the importance of the hoodliner? The one on my 740 is barely attached to the hood. A person at IPD and one of my local independent Volvo techs say that I should just remove it and I'll hardly notice a difference. I'm hessitant as I understand the liner does protect the hood somewhat from engine heat and removing it may accelerate the deterioration of the (exterior) hood paint. My original paint still looks pretty good. A new liner is about $ 300.00 and I have yet to see used one worth salvaging. The IPOD guy also said that I could try Dynamat.
