possible tranny replacemeant 140-160

i saw an add in the paper the other day and all the info that was listed fro it was 1969 volvo...i called the guy up and he said it was in a 69 volvo wagon...he didnt know what the model or wheter it was a 145 or 122 wagon. but im gonna get to take a look at it tomorrow.i was just wonder how it is possible to identify whether its an M40 or not and if it was possible to replace the one in my 71 142e.
