Well I've been banging my head against the wall of supply and think I may have mede a dent!
Short story: Harwal # 1.750 2.383 0.375 ADL appears to be a valid replacement for the felt ring seal at the hub of our dear Spicer/DANA 27 axle.
Long story: One of the PO's of my lovely faded semi-metallic duo-tone blue 122s decided to do a brake job and failed to complete the rears to my satisfaction (including not tightening the gland nuts beyond finger-tight). Pretty new shoes but nasty rusty springs, levers, etc holding it all together. On top of it some brainiac tried to grease the "zerk" they found (Which all of us would identify as the wheel cylinder bleeder). After pulling hair out, I proceeded to tear it apart and determined that the engine had (providentially) blown before they could put more than a few miles on the mess and nothing was beyond repair.
Finding the proper wheel cylinder (Wagner funky year 1967) was enough of a hassle. The Girlings can be had for $10 each but the $32 I paid was not TOO bad.
Skip the bits off to be blasted then I painted them (ooooh, all pretty now) and decided I should clean the hub cover too. One of the unnamed and unknown PO's had replaced the felt "seal" with a piece of upholstery felt, complete with nylon reinforcing grid, so out it came.
Harwal was the ONLY manufacturer that had a lip-type seal that was even close and it was not as much of an interference fit as I would like in the housing but...
I'll let all know how it goes once I get some miles on it.
The last issue was a mystery spacer that is supposed to be between the axle housing and the brake backing plate. I made gaskets for the outside but could find no spacer in the box of parts, nor did I recall seeing one, ever.
Does anyone know if this spacer is critical as it all seems to go together properly? What is it made of, gasket material? Shim stock? Fat casting?
It appears that I could certainly use a spacer as the drum does not seat entirely against the backing plate. The clearance is about 1/4" but there is some overlap. Anyone care to check and let me know about how much clearance they have between the drum and the backing plate (between the lip on the drum and the edge of the backing plate)?
Otherwise it appears to be just fine.
Any "OMIGOD I can't believe you did something so dangerous!" stories or advice???
I used a little gaskacinch to keep drooling to a minimum but it is easily taken apart if I must.
Next I tear into the front hubs to see what lovely surprises await me there.
Honestly, I do love this stuff and am constantly amazed at the odd and peculiar stuff people do to their rigs!
Mike!
