relentless chime / electrical oddities 700

A coworker is having peculiarities with his 1990 740 sedan.

Upon starting his car last evening, the dinging alert that tells you that you left your keys in the car or that your seltbelt is undone, began ringing relentlessly. He looked at the seat belts and opened and closed the doors, to no avail. It dinged (dung?) during a two hour drive.

Additionally, the clock and light that illuminates the automatic transmission gear postion are no longer working. It appears that the dinging problem and the clock/ indicator light death occured at the same time.

Both problems were still present this morning.

Any ideas? My friend is the gentle sort, but after a few more hours of dinging, he might just shoot the thing.

Thanks,

mrad.
