replace or repair engine on nice 240 wagon? engine is gunked up with coolant 200

I made the mistake of driving my beloved 1990 240 wagon (with 220,000 mi) with a bad head gasket, and added gallons of coolant before it gave out- now my mechanic says that the oil turned to jelly and won't even drain out of the crankcase. He's not sure the engine was not damaged as the oil was not liquid enough to lubricate the engine. I checked around and I really am not sure how to buy a replacement engine...

The car has an excellent body and was well maintained before it gave out. Should I have him just replace the head gasket and machine the head, or try to get another engine?

Thanks in advance for your help.
