water pump replacement question STAT! 200 1992

I am in the middle of replacing my water pump. everything went well until I started it up and it's leaking at the heater pipe to water pump connection. I removed the pump and saw where I cut the o-ring. I am leaving to get another one.

Should I put the o-ring in the pump when reassembling it or should I put it on the pipe then attach the pump?
