Car fan won't start

My son recently replaced the radiator and we've since discovered the fan is not coming on. If I give it a shove with a pencil, it will start running. I don't know if it is an aftermarket device or not. Any help where to look is appreciated. I have a 94 940 Turbo,,, trying to get the darn thing running after it sat for a year. (just bought it)
