In Tank Pump Out- Should car be saved? 700

I have a 1990 740GL Wagon which until recently ran pretty well. A couple of months ago, we had the air conditioner replaced and when used, once the car was shut off after driving for awhile, it was almost impossible to restart, but once restarted it would run fine, as long as you didn't use the AC. We also experienced serious hesitation during acceleration, but it would get from point a to point b. Finally, it started dying like it was running out of gas (even though it had it) under random circumstances, but always during humid weather or when under heavy load. I checked for sound and the prepump in the tank wasn't making any, so I assumed it was out. I took it to a local Volvo dealer, assuming this was something that a Volvo guy would know more about and I was quoted $1500 to replace the In-Tank Pump, Fuel Pressure Regulator, Radio Suppression Relay, Fuel Pump Relay and Fuel Filter. Since I found this to be exorbitant, I said no and took the car to CarMax to try and trade it in on a new car. It died on the highway going 65 on the way over and then died on the appraiser. They offered me $100 for the car and since most of the car is healthy, I refused it. But now the car is in the CarMax parking lot and I really don't want to put anymore money into the car that I'm not going to get back. Is it time to say goodbye for a measly $100? Are there any lower cost options to fix? Is the work too complicated for someone without a lot of experience to do? Is there demand out there for these wagons?

Please help. $100 seems like a crime for a car that we've owned for 15 years that just needs a fuel pump and some fuel accesories.
