Hollow knocking/popping sound during braking 200 1992

Hello all:

I have a new noise to track down in my '92 245. When braking I hear two distinct hollow popping noises, starting with one that sounds like it is from the very back of the car, followed by another within a second or two that sounds as if it is coming from the back seat floor area. The knock occurs with braking from both highway and city speeds. It is not consistent every time. It will pop slightly on take-off sometimes too.

This started quite recently-- about a week after I had a local shop install new torque rod bushings. The only other work around the rear of the car was an attempt on my part to adjust the emergency brake. I know the car needs rear shocks quite badly-- I have new Boge Automatics that I intend to install this coming weekend. The other bushings in the rear looked fine-- I got under the car while it was on the lift for the torque rod bushings and had a look myself...

Any ideas?
