alternator trouble after vacation? 200 1990

Hi,
I've got a 90 240 that I'm troubleshooting. Twice I've had trouble after not driving it for 1-2 weeks. The instrument cluster looks dead- fuel and temp gauges don't move and the OD light comes on. The first time, I drove it this way for a day or two and then it went dead due to low battery. After jumping to restart it, everything was back to normal and it ran fine for a couple of months until I parked it for another week. Same symptoms now.

I'm suspicious of something in the alternator or voltage regulator that "freezes" during the inactivity. A brush sticking or not making contact or something.

Any thoughts?
Thanks!
Lyle
