My wife complained about the fact that every weekend I work on my 245 so she made me spend a day with her V70 this weekend. What an adventure. The quick lube place she had (against my orders) taken it for her last oil change had used an air impact wrench to put on the drain plug for the oil pan and had stripped the plug after essentially fusing it onto the oilpan. I spent three hours under the car with vice grips, a pipe wrench, box end wrenches, and a six pack, all to no avail. Finally, I had to take it to a mechanic who had to use what I'd call an air chisel to knock it loose while he tells me how he doesn't like Volvos because all "German cars" are too hard to work on. So, along with the thirty-minute diatribe from the mechanic, whose geography skills were rather lackluster, it takes 4 hours for the oil change. I go to replace the plugs, and our friends at Volvo have, on the 2.4L 5 cylinder, placed the plugs under a panel, which is held in place with 6 bolts that require an allen wrench to remove. Of course, whoever installed it last time, had stripped one of the bolts in the belief that torquing on a plastic panel was absolutely critical. Tack on another hour figuring out how to get it out (needline nose pliers squeezed tightly around bolt edges). Does anyone ever feel like half the work you do on your Volvo is fixing other people's screw ups?
