Engine dies suddenly ona 88 volvo 740 GLE Sedan non -turbo 700

hi everybody,
I own a 1988 Volvo 740 Gle Sedan non turbo engine.. It has 153.000 miles on it and it does not smoke.Today i was driving to walmart and suddenly my tach went down to 0rpms and then jumped to 2500 rpms and down and up and my engine died. I pulled over and tried to crank it up it started fine and was idling fine but it stopped again with tach going up and down ... before it engine stops completely tach is 0rpm, engine wants to run trying to keep goind if u understand waht i am trying to say.. i cranked it up again and idled fien and it took me home stoppeing couple of times... Before i decided to post this massage i started her up and it fired frist attempt, ideling fine and i revved the engine revs fine no missing ect.. and i ended up idiling it for 4 minutes it didn't stop... Tommorrow i am planning to take he rto volvo dealer but i really doesn't wanna spent high price for volvo dealers.. pls englingten me on this.. thanks a lot

P.S; Dist Cap, rotor , Sparg plugs, Sparg plug wires have 20.000 miles on them, main and in tank fuelpump has 38.000 miles on them, brand new oil vent , brand new water pump (cost me 304.00$ dealer like to rip off..)
