car dies while driving even when fully charged i cant figure it out HELP ME PLEASE! 200 1985

Hello! i have just recently finally got a really nice 240 dl wagon . Its a 1985 1/2 series,which volvo said it is a half year that is considered a 1986 240dl. Heres the prob! the alternator has been replace because the battery wouldnt hold a charge even after the battery was replaced. it will stay charged long enough to get me down the interstate about 50 miles, then im stranded till i can get a jump. my instrument gauges, such as speedometer,gas gage,lights ,radio all just quit working it loses power and eventually just goes dead. i was going about 70 and it just died. i am out of options on what this prob could be. if someone has any wisdom to lend me please do.
