REVERSE JITTERS and INTERMITTENT DRIVE CLUNK/BUCKLE 700 1988

Hi
I have a 1988 740GL with 185,000 and a rebuilt AW70L tranny (about 4 years ago). More often than not when I engage reverse the car begins to jitter and stutter (buckle) as it is backing up. There are time when all feels normal and acceptable but that jittery action makes me nervous.Occasionally when shifting into D from P or R there is a cluncking action. This clunking action has occured at times while I am coasting and reapply the gas(sort of like a feeling that the tranny is taking up some slack). I am about to flush my tran. fluid and replace screen for maintenace purposes but would like some help in targeting a possible cause and solution to the reverse jitters or clunkiung action. I thought about the rear differential as a possibility and/or the transmission mount. Any help would be appreciated.

Thank You,
Michael Moss
