Can the ring-gear be offset 45 degrees without removing the transmission ? 700

Hi,

I have a 1985 740 GLE, Non-Turbo sedan with the ZF-22 transmission. I believe my ignition system is the Jetronics 2.2 (so the sensor is embedded in the distributor as opposed to on the bell-housing).

The edge of the gear-teeth on the section of ring-gear that engages with the starter are chewed up. I've changed the starter gear, and would like to also offset the ring-gear by 45 degrees so the worn tooth-edges no longer mess up the starting.

Forgive my ingnorance about this, but is it possible to unbolt the 4 bolts that attach the ring-gear to the engine, rotate it 45 degrees, and rebolt it without removing the tranny ?

Thanks !

Noel
