960 Key won't turn 900

'94 960 160k. The key will slide in and out with no trouble, but physically will not turn. It's not the steering wheel being under tension. I can move the steering wheel about a half inch between the stops. Holding the steering wheel in the middle and not against the stops doesn't help.

I found some references to various ignition key problems on the faq, but nothing that is definitive for my condition. Question is, does this indicate a need to replace the ignition switch? If so, what's the procedure? There is conflicting info on the faq.

And will I have any trouble buying a lock and key set from the dealer? That is, is it necessary to try to match the vin to get a correct one, or will any key/lock set do?

BTW, the wife insists on dangling a massive keyring from the ignition so she can keep all keys in one place. I've read on this forum that the weight can cause damage to the ignition assembly. Is this true, and could it be the cause of the problem? I'd like to hear a yes so I can tell her "I told you"!

Thanks for input and suggestions.

Robert
