940 Overdrive Solenoid 900 1992

I see many overdrive problems posted here and I have had my share. I am on my second OD relay and third OD solenoid ( 1992 940 with only 149,000 miles ). Once again I am having problems.
I disected one old OD solenoid and removed the little piston that opens and closes the aperature. I imagine that the overdrive clicks in when the aperature is open.
Question: If this is true, is it possible to install the OD solenoid without the piston (and without the electrical wire)? What would I miss without the option to manually shut off the OD from the shifter knob? Would the OD remain forever open and shift into 4th based on my speed/rpm?
It would be nice if this problem would no longer occur. Your thoughts?
Thanks
