Strut replacement - a d-i-y job??? 700 1991

It looks like I am going to need to replace my struts (front) and I am wondering if I can do it myself. The description in the FAQ sounds pretty daunting, but the instructions in the IPD catalogue make it sound reasonably do-able. I have replaced my rear shocks and springs, and have done lots of other jobs on my car, but this one sounds involved. My local Volvo dealer gave me a price of $640 to do it for me, but that sounded high to me.

What experiences have you all had? What special tools are necessary for the job?
