Thanks for the replies fellas.

Chakra. I did try to frabricate the sections originally the way you have described but didn't make a very good job of it so ripped it all out again! You're right though it will be finding a donor without rust.

Joris. I don't think I will have to extend out as far in the directions you suggest but will now be more aware of it.

Reckon it will be back to making the sections up and welding them carefully.I'll just have to be more patient.Then I can explore the wonders of leadloading to finish off. Another techique to master!
